The Power of a Made-Up Mind | Overcoming Fear & Doubt

Writer: Winell WilmoteWinell Wilmote

Last year, I had the privilege of speaking at my church’s Mother’s Day brunch, where we explored the theme of blooming in womanhood and motherhood. During that event, someone asked a question that deeply resonated with me:

"What is the seed needed for growth?"

As I pondered this on my drive home, one defining moment in my life stood out—the moment I made up my mind. It was a decision that changed the course of my life, setting me on a path of purpose, restoration, and fulfillment.

Looking back, I realize that growth isn’t just about the opportunities we receive; it’s about the decisions we make. When I fully committed—when I made up my mind—I saw God move in ways I never imagined.

I once believed that my dream of going to graduate school was no longer possible—I was pregnant and had just finished my undergraduate degree with no job in sight. I counted myself out before I even gave myself a chance. But everything changed the moment I made up my mind that my child would have a better life. That single decision set a new course for me. Not only did I complete two master’s programs in just two years, but I did it on a full scholarship—something I never thought possible.

When we decide to trust God and move forward, He makes the impossible possible!

I share more about this in  this video The Power of a Made-Up Mind

Encouragement: It’s Time to Commit

Through this journey, I’ve come to understand that a made-up mind is a powerful force. When we are firm in our decisions, when we stand unwavering in faith, we unlock doors that hesitation and doubt keep closed.

So, I have a challenge for you:

  • Think back to a time when you made up your mind about something—a moment when you were fully committed, with no turning back.

  • It doesn’t matter if it was a good or bad decision; what matters is the intensity of your commitment. Now, consider what God is calling you to do today. Are you ready to make up your mind and pursue it with that same fervor?

  • You cannot experience the miracle of walking on water if you don’t make up your mind to step out of the boat. And you cannot experience what Jesus has for you if you don’t stay focused on Him.

Life will always have distractions. Fear will try to creep in. But you get to choose whether to waver or walk boldly into what God has for you.

Scriptures to Meditate On

  • James 1:6-8 (NIV) – “But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.”

  • Isaiah 26:3 (NLT) – “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, all whose thoughts are fixed on You!”

  • Luke 9:62 (NIV) – “Jesus replied, ‘No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.’”

  • Matthew 14:29-30 (NIV) – “Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’”
